The Basic Structures

I’ve found that if you have a framework or a template, it’s so much easier to get writing. In this training, I cover the basic templates for Emails, Blogs and Social Media Posts. Here’s the break down:

Email Basic Structure/Template

  • Subject Line (needs to get attention, numbers, how-to’s and creating urgency are great ways to do this)

  • Greeting (be polite and use the phrase you would in real life)

  • Make your point (stories are great but don’t make them too long)

  • Call to action ( do you want them to read your blog post to learn more, book a private session, register for your workshop, or watch your YouTube video? Ask them to do just one thing)

  • Closing (sign off like you would in person too, just like the greeting)

  • PS (you don’t have to use these every time but they are great to get straight to the point because a lot of people scroll to the bottom without reading)

Pro Tip:

Text based emails are more effective for your audience than image-heavy emails. I know they’re pretty but trust me on this.

Blog Basic Structure/Template

  • Headline/Title (needs to get attention, numbers, how-to’s and creating urgency are great ways to do this)

  • Intro (intrigue them enough for them to continue reading. Share stats or research, share an anecdote or show some empathy for your reader)

  • Images (don’t just use text. Use images to help break up the text and help illustrate your point)

  • Formatting (break up the text with sub-headings too. Use bold font, call out quotes and use bullet points. Remember people skim articles)

  • SEO (if you’re investing in writing, I would also encourage you to learn about SEO - Search Engine Optimization - so you can learn how to weave in keywords. This isn’t beginner though, you can work on this later once you’re consistent with posting)

  • Call to Action (what do you want the reader to do after reading your article. Make sure to make it clear to them)

Pro Tip:

Don’t let what you don’t know about keywords/SEO stop you. You can tackle this later!

Social Media Post Basic Structure/Template

  • Clear Pictures (make sure it’s focused. You don’t need a fancy camera for this. Use what you have!)

  • Clear and compelling caption (remember your channel to make it appropriate for that channel. Try long and short captions to test what your audience response to. Write like you speak as much as possible)

  • Call to Action (what do you want the person to do - think about something, post an emoji or gif, vote, share the story. Ask them and make it clear)

  • Link (if the channel allows, link to further information like your blog post or podcast or video or your website)

Pro Tip:

Post. Post again. Post again. Then see what your audience is responding to. Then post more of that. This is your strategy!

Tips for the Blinking-Cursor Syndrome

Always have an Idea’s List

I never want you to start from scratch again. Start a google doc, a list in Asana or Evernote.

I don’t care where you keep this but have just ONE place to go to and store your ideas.

When you see something or hear something you like or get inspired by, write. This doesn’t need to be formal or perfect. This is just for you to keep a list of ideas so on those days when you aren’t sure what to say, you have somewhere to go.

Write Every Day.

Yep, you heard me right. Every day. I want you to write every day to get in the habit. You know the saying the more you do something, the better and more comfortable you get. This is the truth for writing too.

I want you to set a timer for 5 minutes every day and write in a notebook. About anything! It doesn’t matter if it’s what you had for breakfast or a deep thought you’re having. Just write. It’s just for you. This is simply to exercise your writing muscles.
